On February 11, 2019, Colas Rail Polska signed the Contract for the implementation of the project called "Platform extension at Poznań Główny station along with reconstruction of the underground passage", which is part of the "Improvement of safety and elimination of operational hazards on the railway network" project. The works started in August 2019 and the planned completion date is March 2022.
The investment is primarily aimed at improving the capacity of the station by building a new platform 417 m long with a new track No. 16, changing the track system (reconstruction of the northern and southern turnout head) and building an underground pedestrian crossing with a length of about 200 m enabling communication by the PKS station with the train station and connection to the east and west of the station. New and rebuilt tracks will be equipped with modern traffic control devices and a new overhead contact line.
